Rooted in Nature: Slow Living at Bali Eco Stay
Ins and outs: Bali Eco Stay is a hidden retreat perched on the southern slopes of Mount Batukaru in central Bali, surrounded by untouched jungle, tumbling waterfalls, and rice terraces carved by generations. Unlike the polished boutique resorts of the south, this off-grid hideaway is a living example of harmony with nature. Bamboo bungalows dot the landscape, tucked between vegetable gardens, rushing streams, and vibrant jungle paths where butterflies and frogs are your daily neighbors.
Location: set in the Tabanan region, Bali Eco Stay feels like stepping into a quieter, wilder Bali. The elevation brings cooler air and a misty stillness, perfect for slowing down. A scenic drive through villages and farmlands takes you far from the tourist trails. Here, nature isn’t curated—it’s embraced. Each path, bridge, and room is built around the existing landscape rather than imposed upon it.
Rooms: there are just eight open-air bungalows, each built from natural materials like bamboo, reclaimed timber, and stone. Designs are earthy and elevated—hand-carved beds, rain-fed showers, and hammocks overlooking waterfalls. Each room is completely unique: from the treetop-inspired Spring Water Bungalow to the secluded Jungle Bungalow that lets you fall asleep to the sound of frogs and falling water.
Food and Drinks: the restaurant sources most ingredients from the permaculture garden on-site or neighboring farms. Expect traditional curries with homegrown spices, cassava fries, garden-grown greens or comfort staples. Meals are slow and simple, served in the breezy wooden restaurant where the rice paddies glow golden at sunset. All water is fresh spring water—some of the cleanest water, mineral-rich, and straight from the tap into your glass.
Care: Bali Eco Stay runs entirely on hydro power from its waterfalls. Waste is composted, plastics are banned, and grey water nourishes the gardens. They’ve partnered with local farmers and artisans, support reforestation efforts, and regularly host workshops on regenerative agriculture. Staff are hired from the surrounding villages, making this not just a retreat, but part of a wider ecosystem of care and community.
Unseen: wander far enough down the jungle path and you’ll find Kanciana Waterfall—a private cascade just a short walk from your bed. Or follow the stream to one of the wild meditation spots, tucked between vines and mossy rocks. At night, with no traffic, no air-con hum, and no light pollution, the jungle comes alive with its own symphony. Whether you're meditating by a stream, journaling by candlelight, or just watching dragonflies hover over the rice fields, this is Bali at its most unfiltered.
